Every Sunday at 9 pm for eleven months, Nikhil in Bengaluru and Sneha in Delhi watched a movie "together". Same film, same second, both pressing play on a countdown. Her internet always lagged. His jokes always arrived four seconds late. Half their relationship was "Hello? You froze."

The frozen frame

On her birthday he called at 11:58 pm. The video stuck, as usual, on a blurry, pixelated version of his face. "You've frozen again," she said, laughing. "Typical."

Then her doorbell rang.

She opened the door still holding the phone, his frozen face on the screen, and there he was, the real one, in the corridor of her PG with a slightly squashed cake and a very proud grin. He had taken the evening flight and spent an hour finding the right building.

No lag

She didn't say anything. She just held him, cake and all, for what her roommates later swore was a full minute. No delay, no buffering, no "can you hear me?". For the first time in eleven months, everything arrived exactly on time.
