Two years, three time zones, one very long voice-note thread. Shreya moved to Germany for her master's. Divya stayed back in Bengaluru and learnt to say "it's fine" in a convincing voice.

Tonight: Kempegowda Airport, Terminal 2, 11:40 pm. Divya has been at the arrivals gate since 10:50 with a hand-made sign that says WELCOME BACK, NAMMA DRAMA QUEEN, and a box of Mysore pak she has been guarding from her own appetite.

ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷ, ಮೂರು ಟೈಮ್ ಝೋನ್, ಒಂದು ತುಂಬಾ ಉದ್ದದ ವಾಯ್ಸ್ ನೋಟ್ ಥ್ರೆಡ್. ಶ್ರೇಯಾ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್ಸ್‌ಗೆ ಜರ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಹೋದ್ಲು. ದಿವ್ಯಾ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಲ್ಲೇ ಉಳ್ಕೊಂಡು, "ಪರವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ" ಅಂತ ನಂಬೋ ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳೋದು ಕಲಿತ್ಲು.

ಇವತ್ತು ರಾತ್ರಿ: ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡ ಏರ್‌ಪೋರ್ಟ್, ಟರ್ಮಿನಲ್ 2, 11:40. ದಿವ್ಯಾ 10:50ರಿಂದ ಅರೈವಲ್ಸ್ ಗೇಟ್ ಹತ್ರ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ "ವೆಲ್‌ಕಮ್ ಬ್ಯಾಕ್, ನಮ್ ಡ್ರಾಮಾ ಕ್ವೀನ್" ಅಂತ ಬರೆದ ಬೋರ್ಡ್, ಮತ್ತೆ ತಾನು ತಿನ್ದೆ ಜೋಪಾನವಾಗಿ ತಂದ ಒಂದು ಬಾಕ್ಸ್ ಮೈಸೂರ್ ಪಾಕ್.

The hug

Shreya comes out pushing a trolley that's far too heavy, scanning the crowd. Their eyes meet. Neither of them runs gracefully. The sign gets crushed. The Mysore pak survives, barely.

And for a few seconds, in the middle of the busiest gate in the city, everything goes quiet. No announcements, no trolleys, no two years. Just the hug.

ಆ ತಬ್ಬುಗೆ

ತುಂಬಾ ಭಾರದ ಟ್ರಾಲಿ ತಳ್ಕೊಂಡು, ಜನರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಹುಡುಕ್ತಾ ಶ್ರೇಯಾ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬರ್ತಾಳೆ. ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಸೇರ್ತವೆ. ಇಬ್ರೂ ಸ್ಟೈಲ್ ಆಗಿ ಓಡಲ್ಲ. ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಅಪ್ಪಚ್ಚಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ. ಮೈಸೂರ್ ಪಾಕ್ ಹೇಗೋ ಬಚಾವ್ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ.

ಊರಿನ ಅತಿ ಬ್ಯುಸಿ ಗೇಟ್ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೆಲವು ಸೆಕೆಂಡ್ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮೌನ. ಅನೌನ್ಸ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಟ್ರಾಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆ ತಬ್ಬುಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ.

What magic is this?

Later, in the cab, they'll talk till three in the morning as if no time has passed. But it's the hug they'll both remember: the moment the world paused so two friends could catch up.

ಏನ್ ಮಾಯೆ ಇದು?

ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ಯಾಬ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಮೂರು ಗಂಟೆ ತನಕ ಏನೂ ಆಗೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದ್ರೆ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ನೆನಪಿರೋದು ಆ ತಬ್ಬುಗೆ: ಇಬ್ರು ಫ್ರೆಂಡ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತೆ ಸೇರಲಿ ಅಂತ ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ನಿಂತ ಹಾಗೆ.

ಏನ್ ಮಾಯೆ ಇದು ಆ ಮಾಯೆ: ಪೇರ್, ಮೃದು ಹೂವುಗಳು, ಬೆಚ್ಚನೆ ವೆನಿಲ್ಲಾ ಹೊಳಪು, ಕಾಲವನ್ನೇ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸೋ ತಬ್ಬುಗೆಗಳಿಗೆ.
