Placement season in a Mysuru engineering hostel is a very quiet kind of loud. Everyone pretending not to refresh their email. Everyone refreshing their email.

Kiran had given up for the day. Third round, two weeks of waiting, a "we'll get back to you" that sounded like a no. At 11:47 pm his phone buzzed. Subject line: Offer Letter.

The corridor

He didn't shout. He just walked out of his room holding the phone up like a trophy. Within forty seconds the whole C-block corridor was awake. Steel plates became drums. Someone played a Kannada party song on a Bluetooth speaker at a volume the warden would later describe as "unacceptable".

Somebody's mother had sent obbattu that week; it was shared eleven ways. Kiran called home. His father, who never says much, said "Sakkat, maga", and then nothing, because he was crying a little too.

Zabardast

It wasn't a big company or a big salary. It was his. And for one night, a hostel corridor felt like a stadium.
