For two years, Tanvi and Abhi had a whole relationship in memes. Not a romantic one. Strictly memes. He sent her engineering jokes at 1 am; she sent back Kannada movie dialogues with captions that made him laugh in lectures. Their chat was four thousand messages long and contained zero full sentences.

The canteen

In the last week of final year, they ended up at the same canteen table, cutting chai, both on their phones. He sent her a meme. It was about two friends who are obviously in love and are the last ones to know.

She saw it. He saw that she saw it. The little "seen" appeared under the message, and no reply came.

Instead, she put her phone down and looked up at him, straight across the table. Not a meme look. A real one. The canteen was loud, someone was shouting for more samosas, and neither of them heard a thing.

Abhi laughed first, the nervous kind. Tanvi said, "Took you two years, ಗೂಬೆ." He said, "You could've said something." She said, "I just did."

Their chat is still mostly memes. But now some of them come with sentences.
