Every Kannadiga carries a little sandalwood inside.

It's in Amma's pooja room on a festival morning. It's in the temple doorway, on Ajja's forehead, in the air of Mysuru. It's the smell of home that you only notice when you're far away from it.

A verse for our land

ಗಂಧದ ಕಾಡಿನ ಘಮದಲ್ಲಿ,
ಕಾವೇರಿಯ ತಂಪಲ್ಲಿ,
ಹಂಪಿಯ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ,
ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆಯ ಮಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ,
ಅಮ್ಮನ ಜೋಗುಳದಲ್ಲಿ,
ಅಜ್ಜಿಯ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ —
ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಡು ಉಸಿರಾಡುತ್ತೆ,
ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ.

In the scent of sandalwood forests,
in the cool of the Kaveri,
in the stories carved in Hampi's stone,
in a string of mallige,
in Amma's lullaby,
in Ajji's tales —
our land breathes,
in Kannada.

The perfume

Gandhada Gani is our Kannada Rajyotsava edition: sandalwood and rose, the scent Karnataka already knows. The full notes arrive on 1 November, the day Karnataka celebrates itself.

Wear your land

This Rajyotsava, wear the land you come from. And when someone asks what you're wearing, tell them: namma naadu.
