ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾಫಿ ಕ್ಲಬ್

The Kannada coffee club

Office friends from different states at a Malleshwaram darshini on Rajyotsava, one ordering in Kannada

Disha's team in Whitefield has people from nine states. For two years the only Kannada in the office was hers, on the phone with Amma, and the security uncle's "ಬನ್ನಿ ಮೇಡಂ" every morning.

Then Rohit from Patna asked her a question in the pantry: "How do I say 'less sugar' to the coffee anna? He keeps adding sugar. I think he likes me."

Fridays, 4 pm

So she started something. Every Friday at four: filter coffee in the pantry, fifteen minutes, one useful sentence. No grammar, no homework, no judging. Week one: "ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಕಮ್ಮಿ". Week two: "ಎಷ್ಟು ಆಯ್ತು?" Week four, for the autos: "ಮೀಟರ್ ಹಾಕಿ". By week ten, Anjali from Kochi was correcting Rohit's pronunciation, and the security uncle had joined as a guest lecturer.

Disha's rule was simple: nobody gets laughed at, and every mistake gets a round of applause.

1 November

On Rajyotsava morning the Kannada Coffee Club took a field trip to an old darshini in Malleshwaram. Disha wore yellow and red. To her surprise, so did all of them.

Rohit walked up to the counter and ordered on his own, slowly and perfectly: "ಒಂದು ಮಸಾಲೆ ದೋಸೆ, ಒಂದು ಸ್ಟ್ರಾಂಗ್ ಕಾಫಿ, ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಕಮ್ಮಿ." The cashier looked up, grinned and replied in Kannada. Rohit understood every word. The whole club applauded. So did the next table.

Gandhada Gani is for the Kannadigas who share it: sandalwood and rose, worn to spread the love of Kannada, one sentence and one cup of coffee at a time.
